DUBUQUE, IA (August 7, 2007)-Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN finally broke through with his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the year as he passed race leader, Terry Casey on lap four and then went on to score the $10,000 victory on Tuesday Night at Dubuque Speedway.  O’Neal’s ninth career Lucas Oil Series triumph made him the 16th different winner in 28 series events this season.  The 43-year-old two-time series point’s runner-up led Matt Miller, Earl Pearson, Scott James and Dennis Erb, Jr. across the line in a fast and furious night of racing.

 

Billy Moyer and LifeLong Locks fast Timer, Terry Casey made up the front row of the “Steel Mart” sponsored 50 lap affair.  Casey, who was making his first ever appearance at Dubuque bolted to the lead at the start of the race that was called back once due to a multi-car accident in turn two which eliminated Freddy Smith.

 

An unbelievable battle for top five positioning occurred right from the outset with three and four wide racing prevalent on the well prepared racing surface.  O’Neal, who started fifth on the grid quickly, worked his way to the front grabbing the second spot from Moyer on the third circuit. 

 

Casey’s lead lasted for just three laps when O’Neal went by him in a hurry to take over the point on lap four.  Matt Miller, who started seventh, was also on the move as he came to the second spot by the fifth lap overhauling both Casey and Moyer for that spot.

 

With ten laps in the books it was still a wicked pace for the field as O’Neal was leading followed by Miller, Moyer, Casey and Donnie Moran.  On the 12th lap the caution would fly for the first time for a stalled Jeremiah Hurst in turn number one.  The current Dubuque point’s leader and last year’s runner-up in the Lucas Oil Series race at the track would restart on the tail.

 

On the Delaware double file restart O’Neal would be out in front by himself with Miller and Moyer lined up side by side for the restart.  O’Neal would briefly lose the lead to Miller on the restart, but O’Neal recovered quickly and retook the lead soon thereafter.  The top runner would have a new competitor to deal with after the caution as two-time series champion; Earl Pearson, Jr. was climbing up from his tenth starting position as he entered the top five around Moran on the 14th lap.

 

O’Neal and Miller would start to encounter some lapped traffic by the 22nd lap and with three laps left until the halfway signal was given O’Neal was starting to put some distance between himself and Miller with at least two lapped cars between the pair.

 

With 25 laps in the books it was still O’Neal looking to open up some more breathing room between himself and Miller, but Miller was not about to let O’Neal get away from him as the two sliced through traffic.  Pearson was up to third as he displaced both Casey and Moyer to move into third.

 

The second and final caution would come out on lap 28 for Brian Birkhofer who slowed on the track and headed pit side out of the race.  On the final restart of the race there was some bumping and rubbing as several cars got out of shape when the green came back out again.  All of the drivers regrouped and continued on without any race stoppage as O’Neal continued to show the way.

 

With 20 laps remaining in the race Miller was still in the thick of things as he was hounding O’Neal for the lead with Pearson, Dan Schlieper and Scott James now the top five combatants.

 

James, who started in the 22nd position, was high tailing it on the top side as he and Jimmy Mars were on the move in the last 20 circuits.  James would pull up alongside of Pearson several times and try to make the pass on the series point’s leader, but could not quite clear him for third.  Schlieper was hanging on for fifth as he would see Mars go by in a hurry on lap 39.

 

With ten laps to go O’Neal was showing his strength as he was working his way around the 3/8ths mile high banked oval in smooth fashion as he was keeping Miller at bay.  The battle for third was more hotly contested and that would last until the finish between Pearson, James and Mars. 

 

With no more caution flags to slow him O’Neal would take his familiar yellow #71 to the finish line crossing ahead of Miller to take his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the year.  Miller in his return to the Lucas Oil Series had his best finish of the season with his previous best being a third place finish at East Bay on February 10th.  Pearson would edge out the heavily smoking car of James to take third and now has a 110 point lead over James in the race for the ’07 Lucas Oil Series Championship.  Dennis Erb, Jr. would finish in fifth.

 

In victory lane for the ninth time in his career O’Neal was glad he was finally able to break through on the ultra-competitive series tour.  “We’ve been running really well here in the last half of the year, I want to thank my car owner, Jerry Jones and my crew, Zach Frields, Justin Shaw and Budda for all of their help, the car was fast all night, the track was real racy, maybe a little too racy because everybody was real close tonight, I was afraid Matt (Miller) was going to come in there and get the lead from me at the end, but I kept that lapped car between us to give us some room there just in case.”

 

O’Neal’s victory came aboard the Jones Core, Valley Hancock Core, Cockerham’s Signs, Allstar Performance, Sunoco Race Fuels, Jay Dickens Racing Engines powered C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo.

 

Miller was behind the wheel of the Larry Moring/MDI Environmental Services/MasterSbilt by Stuckey Monte Carlo.  Pearson took third in the Bobby Labonte Racing/LifeLong Locks/MasterSbilt Dodge with James in the Powell Motorsports/Jay Dickens Racing Engines/Rocket GTO and Erb in the Thomason Transportation/Malcuit Racing Engines/C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo completing the top five

 

Completing the top ten were Jimmy Mars, Terry English, Dan Schlieper, Billy Moyer and Steve Casebolt.

 

The LifeLong Locks Fast Qualifier was Terry Casey with a new track record of 15.204 seconds.  Terry Casey, Damon Eller, Donnie Moran and Billy Moyer won the Hawk Brake and Quarter Master sponsored heat races.  The Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno and Penske Shocks B-Main winners were Ace Ihm and Steve Casebolt.

La SALLE, IL (August 6, 2007)-Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN laid his eyes on La Salle Speedway for the very first time on Monday Night and he definitely liked what he saw as the 35-year-old driver notched his fourth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season taking the SPEED Channel taped “Illinois Valley Challenge” earning $10,000 for the win leading all 50 laps.  It marked the sixth appearance at La Salle Speedway for the Lucas Oil Series and Owens became the sixth different driver to enter victory circle at the track.  Scott James finished second followed by Darren Miller, Wendell Wallace and Tim McCreadie.

 

James and Owens would start from the front row after the redraw for the four heat race winners was complete.  Owens would immediately shoot into the lead at the drop of the green flag with James, Dennis Erb, Jr., Darren Miller and McCreadie running in the top five spots with one lapped scored.

 

Owens who took an immediate liking to the quarter-mile high banked oval showed his pleasure by opening up a seven car lead length lead over James in the early laps as Darren Miller would race past Erb taking over the third slot on lap two as the Chadwick, IL driver was making his first start in an event since Mid-June as he had sat out the last two months due to a thyroid condition.  Miller who nipped Wallace on the final lap of the first heat of the night was now glued to the bumper of James’ car in a bid to overtake him for the second position.

 

With Owens on cruise control it was only a matter of time before he would start to pick up the tail end of the field.  By the 11th lap he had done so as James, Miller, Erb and Wallace were hoping that this would slow Owens as they were attempting to close ground on the four-time UMP Modified Champion.

 

Owens would put three cars between himself and James as James was fending off all challenges from Miller in a close battle for second.  Owens’ big lead would go away with the first caution of the race on lap 20 as Garrett Durrett came to a halt on the back stretch.

 

Not only did the first yellow of the race allow the field to restart right behind him on the green restart, but all lapped cars would go the rear allowing James and Miller a good vantage point on the restart.

 

With a clear track in front of him and the competition now breathing down his neck Owens would show that his growing experience in dirt late models would start to pay off as he would again pull away from the torrid race for second on the restart.  Owens would begin to open up another good sized lead over the field as there was some very good racing for second place on back.

 

At the halfway mark (25 laps) Owens was in control of the race with James, Miller, Wallace and McCreadie the top five runners as Owens was quickly making his way into some more lapped traffic.

 

James was starting to get away from Miller as Miller would have Wallace all over him in the contested race for third.  The heated action on a hot night would be slowed for the second and final time for a slowing Ryan Dauber on lap 36.

 

With 14 laps to go Owens again would have the field on his rear bumper as the Delaware double file restart would provide a trading paint moment for several drivers as there was some bumping inside the top ten that saw some spots gained and lost.

 

But up front Owens was just not going to be denied on this night as he would smoothly follow his same running line lap after lap until the finish where he would win by a comfortable margin.  James would finish a solid second and close to within 100 points of Earl Pearson, Jr. in the race for the 2007 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship.  Pearson who ran as high as eighth in the field fell back to 12th at the finish after a rough final restart that saw him lose some spots.

 

Miller would take the third place money with Wallace, the ’07 Show-Me 100 winner finishing a close fourth followed the McCreadie the 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion.

 

In the Lucas Oil victory lane Owens was highly complimentary of the track he was racing at for the very first time in his career.  “We were fortunate enough to get a good draw for the feature,” said Owens who now equals Pearson with four series wins this year.  “It’s first time we’ve ever run here, I really like this place, the car was good all night,” said the soft spoken driver who has raced a modified and a late model at several tracks across the country.  “The car was just super tonight, I want to thank my car owner Mike Reece of Tazewell, TN and of course Scott (Bloomquist) and Bloomquist Race Cars we really had the car dialed in tonight.

 

James, who recorded his fourth second place finish of the season in Lucas Oil Series competition, continues his drive to overtake Pearson in the chase for the ’07 series title. “It was really nice to get a good point night, we said before the race we just need to take care of business and we feel we have a good shot at the championship, Earl obviously knows how to close out a points deal and myself and (Steve) Casebolt are still relatively new at it, but we feel we can give him a run in the remaining races,” commented the 35-year-old second generation driver afterwards.  “It’s what the second time this season I’ve finished second to Owens, he has run really well in some of our races and he had a better car tonight, so I congratulate him for the win.”

 

Miller, who was running in his first event since June 16 while out battling a thyroid condition that took a month for the doctors to find out exactly what was wrong with him finished third to Owens and James said it felt good to be back in a race car after the layoff.  “It was definitely good to be back racing, the car was really good all night, it was good to be competitive after being off for that long, we had a good solid run, I felt like we had a good shot at winning, but Jimmy and Scott were just a little better than us tonight.”

 

Completing the top ten were Don O’Neal, Matt Miller, Brian Birkhofer, Jimmy Mars and Jeep VanWormer.

 

In preliminary action Wendell Wallace was the LifeLong Locks Fast Qualifier with a lap of 14.355 seconds among the 36 entrants on hand.  Darren Miller, Jimmy Owens, Dennis Erb, Jr. and Scott James won the Hawk Brake and Quarter Master Heat races.  The Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno and Penske Shocks B-Mains were taken by Steve Casebolt and Donnie Moran.  The Edelbrock Hard Charger of the Race was Dan Schlieper, who advanced nine positions during the 50 lap main event.

WHEATLAND, MO (July 21, 2007)-Two-time and defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, Earl Pearson, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL continues his assault on his third straight title as he won his fourth series event of the year on Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Speedway powering away from Brian Birkhofer to capture the $10,000 to win CMH Citizens Memorial Healthcare sponsored event.  Pearson led the first 18 laps of the race until Birkhofer swept past him to take the lead, but Pearson fought back regaining the lead on lap 30 and then pulled away for his ninth career series victory. Birkhofer finished second followed by Donnie Moran, Billy Drake and Billy Moyer. The event was co-sanctioned by the O’Reilly MLRA Late Model Series.

 

With a standing room only crowd on hand Brad Neat and Dan Schlieper made up the front row for the start of the race, but Pearson, who started third quickly made his way to the front of the pack as he darted into the lead heading out of turn number two on the opening circuit. Moyer who started alongside Pearson in the second row moved into second place by the second lap with Neat, Moran and Schlieper trailing.

 

Moran, who started seventh on the grid was on the move again as he went by Neat for third on lap six after a two lap side by side duel.  Pearson, in the Bobby Labonte owned #44 started to pull away from Moyer as he completed the first ten laps. But Pearson was about to enter lapped traffic and that was allowing both Moyer and Moran to close in on him.

 

Just as Pearson was about to put a couple of cars a lap down a caution for debris on the race track came out on lap 12. On the Delaware double file restart Pearson was out in front by himself with Moyer and Moran lined up side by side for the restart.

 

When the race resumed Moran went for second with Moyer falling to third. Birkhofer was coming on strong before the yellow flag but was now back in the thick of things as he was mounting a challenge for the top spots as he was up to the fourth place running spot by lap 13 after slipping back to ninth in the early going.

 

Moyer stormed by Moran on the outside to regain the second spot on lap 14 but exactly one lap later Birkhofer swept by both of them on lap 15 to take over second place.  Birkhofer quickly made up the distance he had between himself and the leader as he closed rapidly on Pearson.

 

The second caution, for debris and a stopped Gary Stolba, slowed the field on lap 17.  It was at this point that business was picking up in the race for the lead as the new third place runner, Billy Drake, still on the point for the restart with Birkhofer running second followed Pearson. With Birkhofer and Drake lined up side by side for the restart behind him Pearson lost the lead for the first time in the race three laps into the green flag run as Birkhofer made it stick on the top shelf and went into the lead.

 

With Pearson maintaining the low side of the track Birkhofer looked like he was going to pull away and build a good lead up, but as the two entered lapped traffic just past the halfway mark (25 laps) Birkhofer and Pearson went at it in a very competitive nettle for the lead as the duo split a lapped car on lap 28.  Pearson never got away from running the low groove as Birkhofer gave the lead back to Pearson on lap 30.

 

Behind those two there was some terrific two and three wide racing going on with Moyer and Drake racing hard for third with Shannon Babb now looking like a late race contender as he was up to fifth around Moran on lap 31.

 

But Moran returned the favor passing Babb on lap 34 to regain fifth and a lap later a brilliant move allowed Moran to pass both Moyer and Drake and jump into the third spot.  Moran had one of the fastest cars on the track in the last ten circuits, but without any caution flags to bring Pearson and Birkhofer back to the pack Moran had to survive through traffic to maintain the third spot as Moyer and Drake were trying to stay within eyesight of him.

 

With five laps to go Pearson built a good lead over Birkhofer, as there were as many as four lapped cars between the two in the closing laps.  With this cushion that Pearson had built up it was going to be very difficult for Birkhofer to make a late race challenge as he was trying to win his third straight Lucas Oil Series win at Lucas Oil Speedway.

 

But on this night Pearson was too good and too strong for anyone to take the win away from him as he took the checkers holding a comfortable margin at the end. To show how much Pearson kicked things up a notch and passing Birkhofer for the lead he lapped everyone up to the ninth place finisher.

 

In the Lucas Oil victory lane Pearson was joined by his crew, track owner Forrest Lucas and his former car owner Carlton Lamm. “I’ll tell you what the car has been good all night from the time we unloaded it. The track was terrific tonight, you could run anywhere on it and I want to thank all of these fans for coming out here tonight, they got their money’s worth,” said the 35 year old driver.

 

“Once Birkhofer got by me I thought I was in trouble, because he went with a little harder tires on than we did. We just took our time and stayed on the bottom of the race track, it was just our turn here tonight, to beat a guy like Birky is always tough, but to do it here where he has won two in a row, he’s a great competitor and he’ll race you clean.”

 

“This place is unreal to look at, the track as I said was racy and thanks to Forrest Lucas and everyone for giving us a great place to race at,” commented Pearson as he stretched his series points lead to a 145 points over Steve Casebolt and 160 points over Scott James.

 

Pearson behind the wheel of 2000 NASCAR Cup Champion Bobby Labonte’s MasterSbilt Dodge Charger with horsepower from Larry Wallace Racing Engines and sponsored by LifeLong Locks, MOPAR, Lucas Oil Products, Sunoco Race Fuels, Allstar Performance and Dunn Benson Motorsports now moves into second place in all-time series victories with his ninth career win.

 

Birkhofer in the Simon Trucking/Pro Power Engines/Rocket Monte Carlo was second breaking his two win streak at the track as Moran in the Custom Cutters/Vic Hill Racing Engines/MasterSbilt Impala SS finished third.  Drake in the Steve Drake/Creative Kitchens and Baths/MasterSbilt GTO was fourth and Moyer claimed fifth in the Car City/Pro Power Engines/MasterSbilt Monte Carlo.

 

Completing the top ten were Shannon Babb, Steve Casebolt, Scott James, Will Vaught and Jimmy Mars.

 

Preliminary action saw Brian Birkhofer take the LifeLong Locks Fast Time Award over the 42 entrants with a lap of 15.189 seconds.  Dan Schlieper, Brad Neat, Earl Pearson, Jr. and Billy Moyer were victorious in the Hawk Brake and Quarter Master sponsored heat races. The Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno and Penske Shocks B-mains went to Al Purkey and Alan Vaughn. Will Vaught, in his first career Lucas Oil Series start earned the Edelbrock Hard Charger of the Race after starting 19th and racing his way through the field to finish ninth, advancing ten positions. Earl Pearson, Jr. would take the K&N Clean Pass of the Race with the pass that proved to be the winning one on lap 30 as he retook the lead from Brian Birkhofer. Billy Drake took the Allstar Performance Performer of the Race Award.

 

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be off for the next two weekends as the 2007 racing schedule resumes with a Monday Night, August 6th appearance at LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, IL for the “Illinois Valley Challenge” and on Tuesday Night, August 7 at the Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway in Dubuque, IA.  Both events will pay $10,000 to win.  Upcoming details on these events will be online at www.lucasdirt.com.

PONTOON BEACH, IL (July 20, 2007)-National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR took the lead on the 15th lap and led the remaining 35 circuits to pick up his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of ’07 on Friday Night at Tri-City Speedway.  The “Miller-Lite 50” win earned Moyer $10,000 for his fifth career series win.  Moyer had to hold off a hard charging Don O’Neal for the win.  Trailing Moyer and O’Neal to the stripe were Shannon Babb, 23rd starting Terry English and Earl Pearson, Jr.  The cameras of SPEED Channel were on hand to tape the event, which will be shown at a date and time to be announced in the future.

 

O’Neal and Babb would take the front row starting spots after the draw for the three heat race winners.  O’Neal would rocket to the point at the drop of the green as he was hooked up around the brand new 3/8ths mile high banked track.  Moyer, who started third, would run second for one lap until Babb got by him on the second lap of the race.

 

With five laps in the books O’Neal had a good lead over Babb, Moyer, Dewayne Kiefer and Dan Schlieper.  The first caution of the race came out after five laps were complete for Terry English’s flat tire.  English, who had to take a series provisional, started 23rd in the field, but had made his way into contention early on in the race until he suffered the flat.  English quickly pitted under caution and rejoined the field at the back before the green came back out again to restart the race.

 

On the Delaware double file restart O’Neal was still the top dog as he continued to show the way as a three wide battle for third saw Schlieper split Moyer and Kiefer to move into the third slot.  Schlieper was not done yet as he pulled alongside Babb and passed him for second on lap nine.  The second caution would come out for a slowing Randy Korte as the defending UMP Late Model Champion went pit side giving up a top run he had going.

 

On this restart O’Neal kept the lead, as Schlieper would develop a problem with his left front suspension, which caused him to loose several spots on the restart.  Babb then slide back into second with Moyer, who had fallen as far back as fifth, was now in the hunt as he climbed back to third on lap ten.

 

Mark Faust would bring out caution number three with 13 laps scored as he suffered severe front end damage on his race car forcing him from competition as he stopped up against the wall coming out of turn number four.  On the restart O’Neal started to receive a serious challenge from none other than Moyer who jumped by Babb on lap 14 and made a daring pass for the lead on lap 15 to become the new leader of the race.

 

A car that was posing a threat to steal the win was defending Tri-City Speedway track champion, Bryan Collins.  Collins who started 18th on the grid steadily climbed through the field picking off cars lap by lap. Collins first entered the top five back on lap ten then overhauled Kiefer for fourth as 15 laps were complete, just as Moyer passed O’Neal for the lead.

 

Moyer, once he got the lead started to pull away from O’Neal and Collins as the fourth caution would fly for Billy Drake who came to a stop on the racetrack on lap 18.  Drake, who started in a backup car for the event came from the tail of the field to race inside the top ten when he fell out of the race.

 

On the restart Moyer lead O’Neal, Collins, Babb and Pearson to the green flag to begin lap 19.  Babb went side by side with Collins in the race for third, but then took the spot away from Collins on lap 23.  At the halfway mark, Moyer opened up some more distance between himself and O’Neal as Babb was starting to pick up steam as he closed in right on O’Neal’s heels.

 

Collins and Pearson put on a nice race for the large contingent of fans that were on hand to watch the race, as Pearson finally got by Collins on lap 26 to take over the fourth position.

 

The fifth and final caution came out for Scott James, who stopped in the middle of the backstretch.  The final restart of the race saw the race go 21 consecutive laps of green flag racing until the final checkers flew.

 

Moyer had almost an eight car length advantage over O’Neal after the final restart, but Moyer was about to pick up some heavy traffic just ahead of him because with just ten laps left in the race O’Neal started to gain ground on Moyer as Moyer was negotiating lapped traffic and had to change his running line on the track a few times.

 

O’Neal closed the lead to just two car lengths at one point with five laps to go as he took a shot at the lead heading into turn number three, but O’Neal could not keep his momentum up as Moyer split between two cars and that gave him just enough clearance to have enough breathing room over O’Neal as the duo took the white flag, but Moyer had enough of a lead and he made it stand up as he crossed the finish line first to take his first Lucas Oil Series win since March at Brownstown (IN).

 

O’Neal’s late race bid netted him second place at the payoff with Babb finishing in third.  English, earned the Edelbrock Hard Charger of the Race as he tore through the field passing Pearson in the late stages to finish fourth after pitting for a flat tire on lap five.  Pearson’s fifth place finish kept him atop the championship points standings after the race at Tri-City Speedway.

 

In the Lucas Oil Victory Lane, the 49 year-old Moyer was happy with his win, which came in a MasterSbilt Chassis  “Everything worked well on the car, the engines and the tires held up, I am glad we finally got another one of these TV shows.  The crew did a great job, we’re really happy with this race car, every time we roll out of the race shop we feel like we have the equipment to win each time, we have the greatest sponsors and I just feel this four link setup works well at a lot of tracks.”

 

“I was surprised to see the white flag, because there for a while my guys were telling me I had a good lead and then all of a sudden it went away.  The car started to push a little and slow down and I figured he (O’Neal) was right there, he went with a different tire combination and I thought maybe my tires were starting to seal over, so I got on it and it took off better in the last few laps.”

 

Moyer’s win about his MasterSbilt Impala SS was powered by Pro Power Engine and sponsored by Car City, Banner Valley Hauling, J&J Steel, Karl Chevrolet, New Vision Graphics, Platinum Motors and RV’s, Watters Autoland and McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Air.

 

O’Neal’s return to the series was aboard the Jerry Jones/Jones Core/C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo SS with Babb snatching third in the Bill Moyer/Car City/C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo.  English was driving the Triple AAA Fence/ARC Racing Engines entry and Pearson was aboard the Bobby Labonte Racing/LifeLong Locks/MasterSbilt Dodge Charger.

 

Completing the top ten were Donnie Moran, Steve Casebolt, Bryan Collins, Mark Voigt and Scott James.

 

Dan Schlieper was the LifeLong Locks Fast Qualifier for the 31 entrants on hand with a lap of 14.774 seconds.  Shannon Babb, Don O’Neal and Billy Moyer grabbed the Hawk Brake and Quarter Master sponsored heat races and the Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno B-Main went to Mark Faust.

COLUMBUS, MS (July 14, 2007)-In one of the most exciting and hard fought Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events of the season on Saturday Night at Columbus Speedway, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN repelled all challengers in taking the “Cliburn Tank Lines/Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau” sponsored event earning $10,000 for his all-time series leading 14th career win and his third of the season.  Bloomquist led all 50 laps but had to battle traffic and several other hungry competitors in taking a two-car length win over Dan Schlieper.  Earl Pearson, Jr. finished third to regain the points lead with Steve Casebolt and Justin Rattliff completing the top five.

 

Ronny Lee Hollingsworth and Bloomquist would start on the front row of the main event. The night was ripe with anticipation after an outstanding array of racing in the heat races and B-mains. This set the stage for what would turn out to be a tremendous feature event.

 

Bloomquist would grab the point at the start of the 50 lapper which was being taped before the cameras of SPEED Channel with the youngster, Hollingsworth and Casebolt snaring the second and third spots on the initial lap. 

 

Casebolt would then move to the very inside of the race track with Hollingsworth trying to follow in Bloomquist’ tire tracks up against the outside retaining wall.  The race was moving along rather quickly as a rapid pace was being set by the field.  The first and only caution of the race would come out on lap seven for Scott James who had stopped crossways coming off of turn number four.  James had come into the Columbus event leading the series points, but he had to use a provisional to make the ultra tough lineup as he would restart the race on the back.

 

On the restart Bloomquist would be out in front by himself with Hollingsworth and Casebolt lined up side by side on the Delaware double file restart.  Casebolt would get the advantage on Hollingsworth moving into the second slot on lap eight.

 

Casebolt then would begin to build momentum on the bottom groove as he was closing down on Bloomquist in a hurry.  Bloomquist was maintaining his top groove line as Casebolt would pull even with Bloomquist as the two would run side by side for a couple of circuits as they would be joined by Schlieper, who had moved from the seventh starting spot up to third at this early part of the race.

 

With 15 laps in the books Bloomquist was just out to a two car length lead over Casebolt with Schlieper, Pearson and Rattliff the top five runners.  Hollingsworth who ran strong for the early portion of the race would leave the race track heading pit side putting to end his night of racing.

 

Bloomquist would then start to encounter some lapped traffic by the 18th lap.  That would allow several drivers to close on him as this would set up a classic race through traffic for the top runners.  Schlieper would hound Casebolt lap after lap until racing by him on lap 26.

 

With the last half of the race underway and no cautions to slow the frantic pace Bloomquist would see Schlieper close the margin on him with 20 laps remaining in the race.  What Bloomquist couldn’t see was Schlieper, Casebolt, Pearson and Rattliff were all within striking distance of him as they all battled through heavy traffic as the race track was still showing three distinct grooves this late in the race.

 

Sometimes there was four wide racing up front with the lapped cars being in the mix Schlieper was using the bottom side to close on Bloomquist’ quarter panel on several occasions.  At one point it looked like Schlieper was going to get Bloomquist trapped behind a lapped car, but each time Bloomquist would make the move he needed to keep Schlieper from taking the lead.

 

With five laps to go, the winner was still up in the air as Bloomquist was still having to contend with traffic, but he would make what turned out to be his best move of the race as he split two cars perfectly and that was the ticket he needed to maintain a two car length advantage over Schlieper until the checkers flew.

 

In the Lucas Oil victory lane afterwards Bloomquist along with the large crowd of fans on hand were still trying to catch their breaths after a thrilling race.  “I am sure it looked a lot better from where everyone else was sitting, it wasn’t easy, I saw Dan there a few times, but the car was good we liked the top better than they did, but it also worked good on the bottom as well.  We had to do a couple of slide jobs there in traffic; because it was getting close there with the pressure from Dan, everybody out there drove a good race tonight.” This is one Bad Bull Ring” Wow what a race!!!

 

“I can’t say enough about Vic Hill and the engines he has , I want to thank Bob and Barb Miller, Ohlins, Sweet Manufacturing, Hoosier Tires and everyone else that plays such a great role with our race team, we couldn’t do this without their help,” said the 43 year old National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member.

 

Bloomquist in his own self designed Bloomquist Race Cars Chevrolet is sponsored by Miller Brothers Coal, Hawkeye Trucking, Sweet Manufacturing, Hoosier Racing Tires, Ohlins Shocks, Allstar Performance and Arizona Sport Shirts with the aforementioned Vic Hill Racing Engine under the hood.

 

Schlieper picked up another strong finish by placing second in his Miller Brothers Coal/Pro Power Engines/C.J. Rayburn Ford Fusion.  Pearson with his third place showing regained the championship points lead in the Bobby Labonte Racing/LifeLong Locks/MasterSbilt Dodge Charger as Casebolt took fourth in the Dale Beitler/Reliable Painting/Rocket Pontiac GTO.  Rattliff finished fifth in the James Rattliff/Rattliff Motors/C.J. Rayburn Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

 

Completing the top ten were Wendell Wallace, who earned the Edelbrock Hard Charger of the Race after starting 18th.  Billy Drake was seventh followed by Terry English, Freddy Smith and Chris Wall.

 

In Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Preliminary action it was Jason Cliburn taking his first career LifeLong Locks fast Time Award with a fast lap of 13.54 seconds around “The Baddest Bullring in the South.”  There were 46 cars that timed in.  Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Earl Pearson, Jr., Scott Bloomquist and Steve Casebolt were the winners in the Hawk Brake and Quarter Master sponsored heat races.  The Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno and Penske Shocks B-mains were taken by Bub McCool and Wendell Wallace. 

 

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series heads to the Midwest this upcoming weekend with two events.  On Friday Night, July 20th the series comes to the Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, IL for the third time and on Saturday Night returns for the second time this season to “The Diamond of Dirt Tracks’ the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO.  Both events will pay $10,000 to win and $700 to start.  Friday’s event at the Kevin and Tammy Gundaker promoted facility will be the first time the series has raced on the new 3/8ths mile track.  A special open practice session will be held at Tri-City on Thursday Night from 6-10 pm and the Friday event will have the cameras of SPEED Channel on hand to tape the event which will be shown on a date and time to be announced in the future.  For more information you can log onto www.lucasdirt.com.
