PORTSMOUTH, OH (October 19, 2013) – Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, IL captured the biggest race of his young career winning the 33rd Annual RED BUCK Dirt Track World Championship at Portsmouth Raceway Park on Saturday Night.  Sheppard at age 20 became the youngest driver in the history of the DTWC to win the crown jewel event. Sheppard earned $50,000 as he became the 24th different driver to win the DTWC and captured his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.

Sheppard piloting the #1 Mark Richards Racing, Rocket House Car charged through the field from his seventh starting position using the very top groove to pass Scott Bloomquist for the lead on lap 43. Sheppard would motor away from the field after each restart through the middle stages of the race fending off challenges from several seasoned veterans en route to his victory in front of a capacity crowd. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY advanced from his 15th starting position to finish second at the checkers and clinching second place in the final LOLMDS Championship Points Standings. Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY took home third followed by 14th starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, IL. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN rounded out the top five.  With his fifth place finish Owens was crowned the 2013 Lucas Oil late Model Dirt Series National Champion for the third year in a row.

Sheppard, who was subbing for Josh Richards in the Rocket Chassis House car this weekend, was stunned with his accomplishment in victory lane.  “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Sheppard in victory lane.  “To come here in this car and win this race is just unbelievable, we had a great weekend, we set fast time last night, and almost won our heat race, but to come from seventh tonight and win was just unbelievable. And to beat the caliber of drivers in this field and the history of this event is just awesome. We’ve really had such a good year with our own Rocket car as well and I have to thank my dad and grandpa for all of their help this season.  I also want to thank all the sponsors on the number one car, Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ernie D’s, Ace Metal Works, Sunoco Race Fuel and Roush-Yates Engines’, stated Sheppard.

Francis driving the #15 Clint Bowyer Racing, Georgia Boot entry grabbed the second spot on lap 79 from Boggs.  But over the final 21 laps of the race Francis could not catch Sheppard.  “Congrats to those guys on the win, Brandon and Mark they did a great job all weekend.  I thought maybe I had enough to chase him down at the end, but we finished the year strong and got second in the Lucas Oil points. We had a good battle all season with Jimmy (Owens) and congrats to him and his team on their championship. We’ll be back next year with Clint Bowyer Racing and Georgia Boot to try and win this championship again”, stated Francis.

Jackie Boggs, whose hall of fame father was the late Jack Boggs, won the DTWC three times in his career. Jackie was in the hunt for his first DTWC win over the last half of the race, but came up just short in finishing a solid third place.  “The nose of our car was digging in the track at times and I couldn’t get off the corners like I wanted to. But we had a real good set-up for the feature and was hoping all the laps I’ve ran here would pay off with a win. To run third with these guys is still great”, stated Boggs, driver of the #4B with sponsorship from Quick Response Environmental and Industrial Services and Swartz Race Cars.

Completing the top ten were Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR; Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL; Eric Wells of Hazard, KY, and Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV.

In preliminary action, Brandon Sheppard set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 79 entrants, with a lap of 14.575 seconds. Jackie Boggs set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.755 seconds. Earl Pearson, Jr., Steve Shaver, Eric Wells, Jackie Boggs, Scott Bloomquist and Billy Moyer won their respective heat races.

2013results_10-5.jpg   WOODSTOCK, GA (October 5, 2013) – After coming close a year ago to winning his first Lucas Oil Dixie Shootout, Chris Madden sealed the deal tonight to take home the $10,000 pay day in the Southeast’s most prestigious event. Madden led all 50 laps for his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series triumph of 2013.   Billy Ogle, Jr. charged from the 11th starting position to take second. RED BUCK Fast Qualifier and pole sitter Randy Weaver came home in third. Six-time Shootout winner, Scott Bloomquist was fourth. Defending race winner, Jimmy Owens finished fifth.   “After what happened to us last year, leading until the last lap and not winning, this feels great,” said the 38-year-old veteran driver.  “The car was so good all night. I told Scott (Bloomquist) I didn’t know what to do to the car for the feature. It was very easy to drive, and that’s a scary feeling going into the feature, because you want to change something. But you don’t want to mess up anything.”   Madden’s Bloomquist Race Cars, Clements-powered entry was solid from start to finish. Ogle made a late-race charge and closed to within a car-length with five laps to go. Madden pulled away in the final two circuits as he headed to Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the fifth time in his career.   “I tried to be smooth and not wear out the tires. Lap-traffic wasn’t too bad tonight, and everybody gave each other plenty of room. I have to thank Century Plastics, Henderson Amusement, KC Transport, Cushman Paint and Body, Hamrick’s of Gaffney, East Coast Entertainment, and everyone else; we couldn’t do it without them. To win this race in front of this crowd is just tremendous. It’s the biggest crowd I have seen here since I have been coming to race at Dixie.”   Ogle’s charge to the front began when he broke into the top five by lap eight. Ogle moved up to fourth, passing Bloomquist on lap 18. Two laps later Ogle made a great move, passing both Dale McDowell and Weaver to advance to second. Ogle’s car was working so well on the bottom that it looked like he might catch Madden at the end.   “This track and Rome are probably my two favorite tracks to run on. We really were hooked up on the bottom, and we got a great run into the corners and out of them. With about five to go I thought maybe I had a chance to catch him (Madden), but I had some difficulty with lapped traffic, and it sort of hurt my momentum. We got real close there one lap, and I was hoping he might slip up, but he didn’t. We will take this finish and head to Rome tomorrow night,” said the race runner-up. “I have to thank Massey Electric, Cherokee Millwrights, Blount Excavating, David Bryant, and Rocket Chassis for giving me such a good car to drive.”   Weaver, who was looking for a clean sweep of the racing activities, ran in second for several laps, until finally yielding that position to Ogle on lap 20. “He (Ogle) was really fast on the bottom; I couldn’t hold him off, with only one caution. I really didn’t have time to get settled down. We are thrilled to get a podium finish here, and we will keep coming back until we can win the Shootout,” said Weaver.   “The track crew did a great job tonight; it was fast all night long. Madden was just in another zone, this was great experience for us running against the Lucas Oil drivers. We plan on starting out next year running with them,” said the driver of the Outlaw Racing Southeast. Cornett-powered, GRT Ford.   Completing the top ten were Ray Cook, Casey Roberts, Steve Casebolt, John Blankenship and Dale McDowell. In preliminary action, Randy Weaver set the overall RED BUCK fast time (Group A) amongst the 47 entrants, with a lap of 14.464 seconds. Chris Madden set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.747 seconds. Randy Weaver, Ray Cook, Chris Madden, and Dale McDowell won their respective heat races. Steve Francis and Eric Wells won their respective B-Mains.   Up next for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be the Rome Showdown, tomorrow night, Sunday, October 6th, at Rome International Speedway in Rome, GA. The event will feature RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Main, and the 50-Lap, $10,000-to-win main event. KNOXVILLE, IA (September 28, 2013) – Darrell Lanigan used a late-race restart to his advantage, passing Josh Richards on lap 95 and leading the remainder of the race to win the 10th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway.  Lanigan earned $40,000 for his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.

Josh Richards won the preliminary feature events on Thursday and Friday and was looking to become the second driver in the history of the event to sweep all three nights along with Billy Moyer in 2010. Richards would have to settle for a runner-up finish tonight in the 100-lap feature event followed by Tim McCreadie, defending race winner, Steve Francis, and Billy Moyer rounded out the top five finishers.

Richards led the first six laps of the race until Dale McDowell took over the point for one circuit. Richards fought back and regained the top spot on lap eight.  Richards held the lead until Lanigan took over on lap 20. After the top five drivers battled fiercely for most of the race up front, the final caution came out for Jason Feger who was running third on lap 93 but was collected in a violent crash that included Don O”Neal, Dale McDowell and Scott Bloomquist. This set up a six-lap shootout to the finish as both Richards and Lanigan would lead the field back to green. On the restart, Lanigan dove to the bottom as he and Richards raced side-by-side down the backstretch.

Lanigan passed Richards before the cars entered turn three on lap 95, allowing him to carry his momentum to the victory.  “I wanted to win this race so bad,” said the 43-year old Kentucky native.  “Our car was good all weekend here.  We didn’t make the trip last year, but to come back and win this race for the first time, is phenomenal.  Knoxville is right up there among the elite tracks in dirt track racing and they do a tremendous job with the racing surface’, stated an ecstatic Lanigan in victory lane.

Lanigan went onto compliment the facility and his team on his crown jewel victory. “This race continues to grow every year and really is a great event with a great purse. We are just honored to be able to come here, and to beat these guys says a lot about our race team, our Club 29 Rocket, Cornett Racing Engines, and all of the people that help us out. Thanks to all the fans for coming out this weekend,” said Lanigan.

Richards now has 3-second place finishes in this event was disappointed with his second place finish as he thought he had a car capable of winning.  “We started off real good, the car worked well, then we slowed the pace a little bit, and that’s when Darrell caught me and got by me the first time.  That red flag with six laps to go really hurt us, I am kicking myself a little bit.  When he got by me on that restart, I knew I was in some trouble, because I couldn’t turn the car in the corners”

McCreadie had a good performance on Friday Night and backed it up with a solid third–place in the 100-lap finale.  “We haven’t run that well for about a month. To come here and get third is almost like a win for us.  I know we have won this race before, but hopefully it’s a big step forward to close out the year.  This is such a good-paying race, everyone needs to support these kinds of events’, stated McCreadie.

Completing the top ten were John Blankenship, Brady Smith, Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Owens, and Chad Simpson.

In preliminary action Steve Lance won the D-Main. Brian Birkhofer won the C-Main. Morgan Bagley won the B-Main.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action next weekend October 5th and 6th, with a pair of events in the “Peach State”. On Friday, Oct. 5th, the series will head to Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA for the Lucas Oil Dixie Shootout. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 6th, the series will make an appearance at Rome International Speedway in Rome, GA for the Rome Showdown. Both events will feature RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-Lap, $10,000-to-win main events. For more information, log on to www.dixiespeedway.com and www.raceromespeedway.com.

KNOXVILLE, IA (September 27, 2013) – Josh Richards showed his speed at Knoxville Raceway, winning the $7,000-to-win feature event on Friday Night. Richards also captured Thursday Nights’ preliminary feature. On Saturday Night, Richards can become the second driver in the history of the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals to sweep all three nights. Billy Moyer completed the feat in 2010.

Jimmy Owens came home in second followed by A.J. Diemel, Earl Pearson Jr., and 21st starting, Tim McCreadie.

The 25 lap main event got off to a rocky start with a pair of caution flags during the first five laps of the race. Jimmy Owens led the first four laps, until A.J. Diemel took over the point. Diemel held the lead for four circuits until Richards powered by him on lap nine.

“It was a crazy start to the race,” said Richards, who is racing at Knoxville for the first time in three years. “Our car was real good again tonight. This track suits our driving style, and we go into the turns wide-open and let the car rotate through the turns. As I said last night, this is one of my favorite tracks. I certainly have missed coming here the last three years, and to win the first two nights, it’s just unbelievable.”

Richards held a sizable lead over Diemel and Owens with ten laps to go. Owens tried several times to get around Diemel. Finally, with seven to go, Owens made the pass on Diemel for second, coming out of turn number two. A caution with five laps to go set-up a dash between Richards and Owens, but Richards would prevail, holding off Owens for the victory.

“I have to thank Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ernie D’s Enterprises, Ace Metal Works and Sunoco Race Fuels. This Roush-Yates Ford engine has been solid all-year long,” said the driver of the Mark Richards Racing Rocket Chassis house-car.

Owens, the 2-time LOLMDS National Champion, commented, “We were having electrical problems on the restarts, it was cracking and popping, I thought it was going to die on us, and then finally it ran like it should towards the end. We got around him (Diemel), but Josh was already so far out in front, we weren’t going to catch him. We got that caution with five to go, and I was going to try a move going into one, but if I couldn’t clear him, I wasn’t going to take a chance of tearing us both up”.

Diemel had his best career finish at Knoxville, earning a podium finish. “We are extremely happy to come home third against these Lucas guys. I thought maybe early on we had a real good chance to win tonight. We learned so much here the last two nights. It builds our confidence heading into Saturday Night’s big race.”

Completing the top ten were Steve Francis, Jimmy Mars, Jason Feger, Ryan Gustin, John Blankenship. In preliminary action Ryan Gustin set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group A) with a lap of 17.941 seconds. John Blankenship set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group B) with a lap of 18.021 seconds. Brady Smith, Steve Francis, Chris Simpson, Ryan Unzicker, Darrell Lanigan, and Shannon Babb won their respective heat races. Denny Eckrich won the D-Main. Jason Rauen won the C-Main. Ryan Gustin won the B-Main.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action tomorrow night, Saturday, September 28th, with a D-Main, C-Main, B-Main, and the $40,000-to-win 100-Lap main event. KNOXVILLE, IA (September 26, 2013) – In his first visit to Knoxville Raceway since 2010, Josh Richards captured the opening night of the 10th Annual Lucas Oil Knoxville Late Model Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores. Richards took the lead from Brandon Sheppard on lap eight and led the remainder of the race, for the $7,000 victory in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event.   Richards took the Mark Richards Racing, Valvoline, Roush-Yates Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis Ford to Lucas Oil Victory Lane ahead of Darrell Lanigan, Jason Feger, Dale McDowell, and Bub McCool.   “It’s great to be back here, I love this place! It’s hard to believe it has been three years! The track was great as always, and it’s one of my favorite tracks, no doubt,” said the 25-year-old racer. I could hear him (Lanigan) a few times, but I just kept my line. I had a couple of issues in turn two and he was able to pull along-side me a few times.”   Sheppard took the lead at the start of the 25 lapper and looked dominant in the early going. A red-flag for a multi-car accident involving Jimmy Owens, Dennis Erb Jr., and Joel Callahan halted the action with seven laps complete. All drivers escaped unharmed, but their cars were done for the night.   When the race went green again, Richards made the pass for the lead on Sheppard. Richards then had to fight off several challenges from Lanigan as he held the lead to the finish. Feger made it close towards the end, rallying on the topside to earn a podium finish.   “We had a really good car! He (Richards) was just a tick better tonight! We aren’t used to this hard-tire rule, but it’s the same for everyone! The crew did a great job. The track was great as always here! We got some good points tonight, so we’ll tune on the car even more tomorrow,” said Lanigan.   Feger nearly stole the win from the top two, but his efforts came up just short. “We really like running here! That berm was a little tricky tonight, but we had a good car,Like Josh and Darrell said, we have to get used to these harder tires. My car was better as the race went on. I think with some more work we can win one of the next two nights,” said Feger.   Completing the top ten were Billy Moyer, Chad Simpson, John Blankenship, Brandon Sheppard, and Earl Pearson Jr. In preliminary action Don O’Neal set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group A) with a lap of 17.363 seconds. Dale McDowell set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group B) with a lap of 17.718 seconds. Billy Moyer, Bub McCool, Joel Callahan, Tony Jackson Jr., Morgan Bagley, and Steve Francis won their respective heat races. Ryan Gustin won the D-Main. Shannon Babb won the C-Main. Eddie Carrier Jr. won the B-Main.   The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action tomorrow night for the second preliminary night at the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store. There will be RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, last chance races, and another 25 Lap main event. The weekend will conclude on Saturday, September 28th, with a D-Main, C-Main, B-Main, and the $40,000-to-win 100-Lap main event.
