2011results_9-3.jpg PORTSMOUTH, OH (September 3, 2011) - Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN withstood all of Jimmy Owens’ challenges to win the Pepsi 50 River Days Rumble on Saturday Night at Portsmouth Raceway Park.   Owens started 22nd and finished just behind Bloomquist at the stripe. He was followed by 14th place starter, Jared Landers of Batesville, AR; Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY; and Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, WV. Scott James grabbed the lead at the start of the $10,000 to win race. He was in control for most of race, holding a good-sized lead through traffic. A heated race for second place was going on between last year’s winner, Dale McDowell and Bloomquist who eventually seized the spot. Bloomquist then caught James as the two ran side-by-side for a dozen laps with Bloomquist leadingfor the first time on lap 39. A lap later it was James at the stripe. Then a caution came out for a flat tire on Ray Cook’s car. On the restart, Bloomquist gained the point in turn two as James’ left rear tire went flat forcing the final caution of the race. This set up a nine-lap shootout between Bloomquist and Owens.  On the restart Bloomquist led Owens, but Owens closed right on Bloomquist’ rear with five laps to go. Bloomquist changed his line on the track to prevent Owens from stealing the win away from him. He went on for his 11th series win of 2011. The win for Bloomquist cut Owens’ points lead to 110. “The track was great all night, we started in the fourth row and it only took a couple of laps to get to the front,” said Bloomquist, who earned career win number 514 with the triumph. “You could run anywhere on this track. We had a real good race there with Scott [James], we ran side-by-side without touching, I don’t know if he thought I got into him or what, it was accidental if I even did. Then he had the flat and went out. Holding off Jimmy there at the end was tough because he was coming on strong from where he started.” Bloomquist in his Bloomquist Race Cars Ford is sponsored by Roush-Yates, Base Racing Fuels, Ohlins, Miller Brothers Construction and Sweet Manufacturing. Owens came into the event with a 130-point lead over Bloomquist and was excited with his finish. “I just started too far back, the car was great at the end, but Scott was just a little bit better,” said the driver of the Mike Reece-owned, Reece Monument Company, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford. Completing the top ten were Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA; Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, IL; and John Blankenship of Williamson, WV. In preliminary action, Rod Conley was the Red Buck Cigars Fast Qualifier among the 51 entrants on hand. The heat race winners were Doug Drown, Don O’Neal, Scott James, and Dale McDowell. The B-mains went to Chris Brown and Ben Adkins. Tomorrow night, September 4th, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be back in action at Portsmouth Raceway Park for the 43rd Annual Hillbilly Hundred paying $25,000 to win. For more information log onto www.portsraceway.com. 2011results_8-27.jpg BARDSTOWN, KY (August 27, 2011) – For the second night in a row Don O’Neal ended up in victory lane.   The 47-year-old driver started on the pole and led all 50 laps in winning the 11th Annual Cornett Racing Engines Bluegrass Classic at Bluegrass Speedway. O’Neal was driving the MasterSbilt House car, and earned $10,000 for the victory which came on the heels of his win Friday Night at Lawrenceburg. O’Neal’s 17th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series came over Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA; Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; and Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA. O’Neal won the race at Bluegrass a year ago made a clean sweep of the night’s activities as he set fast time, won his heat, then got the lead at the start of the race and held on the rest of the way. “We had a good qualifying effort, ran the heat race strong and got out front before it became one-laned, the lapped cars gave us plenty of room, but they started to dice it up, and I didn’t want to make a mistake.” “If you dared to step up out of groove it was going to cost you. We’ve not been good the last two weeks, but the last three nights we have been real good, Tader, Cody, Randy, Steve and everybody else back at the shop, thanks to Jerry Jones and his wife for their support.” O’Neal sits third in the series points standings. O’Neal’s car is sponsored by Magnaflow Exhaust, Jones Core, Second Chance Livestock Dispatch, VP Fuels, Independence Lumber, Janowski Insurance, Superior Cleaning, Hoosier Tires and his car is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine. McDowell finished second at Volunteer Speedway on Thursday Night was pleased with his second place run at Bardstown. “With the year we’ve had, to have two second place finishes, just shows you we never quit.  Lawrenceburg didn’t go so good, but tonight the car was good, just not good enough to get the win, once Don got in front it was pretty much all she wrote,” said the driver of the Crawford Supply, Clint Bowyer Racing, Rocket Chevrolet. Bloomquist finished third to close to within 130 points of Jimmy Owens, who finished sixth for the second night in a row. Francis in the Valvoline, Roush-Yates, MasterSbilt Ford came home fourth followed by Birkhofer in the J&J Steel, Pro Power, MB Customs entry. 2011results_8-26.jpg LAWRENCEBURG, IN (August 26, 2011) – Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN charged to the lead on lap 32, passing Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA. He went on to win Friday Night’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event at Lawrenceburg Speedway. O’Neal earned $10,000 for his second series win of the season. Birkhofer finished second with Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN barely edging out Jared Landers of Batesville, AR. Landers was fourth and 15-year-old Tyler Reddick of Corning, CA was fifth. Birkhofer won the LOLMDS event at the track back in 2009. He sprinted to the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event in front of a packed front stretch grandstand. Birkhofer, Bloomquist, and O’Neal ran three-wide for the lead for several laps before the caution appeared on lap six.  Birkhofer held his lead through several cautions. O’Neal started fourth and made a run for second on Bloomquist, passing the Hall of Famer on lap eight. With 15 laps complete, it was Birkhofer, O’Neal, Shane Clanton, Bloomquist and Earl Pearson Jr. out front. Birkhofer managed to keep his lead for most of the race, but O’Neal started to put the pressure on him for the lead about halfway through the race. O’Neal slipped up, and Bloomquist got by him for second on lap 25 as a three-car chase for the lead was continuing. O’Neal drove around Bloomquist to regain second on lap 30 and two laps later took over the top spot from Birkhofer before a thunderous home-state crowd. O’Neal began to pull away from Birkhofer and Bloomquist, increasing his margin until he claimed the victory. “Birkhofer had a really great race car at the start. I drove ours (the car) for all it was worth, the cushion was rugged up there in two, I was just hanging on there at the end, I hope the fans enjoyed that one,” said the 47-year-old who collected his 16th career series victory. “I kept trying that top groove and it finally paid off. We had to battle those lapped cars there at the end, it was really hard racing between the three of us for the lead. I was clean racing and I can’t thank Tader Masters enough, Cody Mahoney, and everybody else on the crew, it’s nice to win here in Indiana,” said the winner. O’Neal’s MasterSbilt Chevrolet is sponsored by Magnaflow Exhaust, Superior Cleaning, Jones Core, Independence Lumber, Second Chance Livestock, Janowski Insurance and VP Racing Fuels. His car is powered by Jay Dickens Racing Engines. Birkhofer finished second in the J&J Steel, Pro Power Engines, MB Customs. He said, “O’Neal had the better car. Don drove the wheels of it, he passed me clean, that was a great race for the lead, I was hoping to hang in there, but he found that top groove and drove right by me.” Bloomquist in his Hawkeye Trucking, Roush-Yates, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford beat Landers to the line by a half a car length for third. “The track was racy all night, you could run high, low, in the middle, we all three had different tires on. That was an exciting race for the fans, we all raced each other hard and clean, we’ll take third and head to Bluegrass tomorrow night.” Landers still leads the Quarter Master Rookie of the Year standings and came home fourth in the Crawford Supply, ECR Race Engines, Rocket Chevy. Reddick, who started tenth, placed fifth in the Broken Bow Records, Gaerte Race engines, Bloomquist Race Cars entry. Completing the top ten were Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, GA; Steve Casebolt of Richmond, IN; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; and Eric Wells of Hazard, KY. In preliminary action, Scott Bloomquist was the Red Buck Cigars Fast Qualifier among the 31 entrants. Heat races were won by Bloomquist, Jared Landers, Brian Birkhofer, and Don O’Neal. The B-mains went to Dale McDowell and John Blankenship. BULLS GAP, TN (August 25, 2011) – Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN took the lead from Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA on lap 42 and led the rest of the way to win Thursday Night’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned Reece Monument Scorcher 50 at Volunteer Speedway. McDowell finished second followed by Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN; and John Blankenship of Williamson, WV.   McDowell took the lead at the start of the $10,000 to win race. Owens slipped to third on the opening lap. O’Neal moved into second to challenge McDowell early on, but Owens passed O’Neal for second on lap 15. With only one caution flag to slow the action, McDowell and Owens then had a terrific two-car race for the lead before the tremendous crowd that was on hand to witness the event.   Owens stalked McDowell for several laps until he dove underneath of McDowell at the flag stand to complete lap 41. Owens then took the lead heading into turn number one. Owens raced through heavy lapped traffic as he went on to score his sixth series win of 2011 and extending his points lead over Bloomquist.   “It’s good to win here in front of the fans. My car owner was here, Mike Reece and he sponsored the race, which makes it even more amazing to be able to bring home the win,” said Owens. “Dale had a real good car tonight, we slipped up there in turn four on that first lap, but we got it back in line and ran down O’Neal and then had a really great race with Dale.”   “The track was really racy tonight, you could run anywhere on it. The lapped cars are always an issue here, but we just took our time and we were fortunate enough to get by Dale. He’s had a tough year and I’m sure he is trying hard to get that first win. Thanks to everybody for coming out tonight, I hope they enjoyed the show.”   Owens drives a Bloomquist Race Cars Ford sponsored by Reece Monument Company, Gantte Appraisals, Midwest Sheet Metal, Red Line Oil, VP Race Fuels, Hoosier Tires and is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine.   McDowell in one of his best runs of the year was grateful for his second place finish. “We are thrilled with second; Jimmy had the best car tonight. BATESVILLE, AR (August 21, 2011)- Not even a one day delay could slow down Scott Bloomquist as he claimed the win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned, 19th Annual COMP Cams Topless 100 at Batesville Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon. It was his fourth event title.

Mother Nature abruptly halted the 100-lap event, after 12 laps of the feature on Saturday night. The race resumed on a steamy Sunday afternoon at the 3/8-mile oval.  Before the green ever waved, bad luck struck fifth place runner, Dale McDowell. His left front tire rolled away from his #17 Clint Bowyer Motorsports Rocket.  He ducked into the hot pit to get the tire reattached, but had to join the tail of the field.

As the action finally resumed Scott Bloomquist led the field back to the green flag with Jimmy Owens, Shannon Babb, Jared Landers, and Bub McCool in tow.  Bloomquist quickly extended his advantage to five car lengths as Owens tried to keep pace.  The caution flag was displayed on lap 15 as fourth place runner, Babb, spun out in turn three. The top five after the restart consisted of Bloomquist, Owens, Landers, McCool, and Steve Francis.

By lap 36 Landers had made his way around Owens and was alongside Bloomquist for the lead, but Bloomquist soon motored away from Landers and the remainder of the field.  Over the next several laps Bloomquist built a straightaway lead over the pack, as the top five running order remained the same.

A series of cautions had little effect on the running order amongst the leaders until Bub McCool relinquished the fifth position on lap 74 as his right rear tire went down in turn one to bring out the final caution of the event.  Bloomquist continued to maintain a sizeable lead, the battle for the second spot began again to intensify, and Jimmy Owens used lapped traffic to his advantage to move past Landers for the second spot in turn two on lap 89.  Over the course of the next six laps, drama began to build as Owens erased Bloomquist’ straightaway lead as he trailed the leader by only one car length at the flag stand with five laps to go.

Despite his best efforts, Owens was unable to overtake Bloomquist. The Mooresburg, Tennessee driver piloted his #0 Hawkeye Trucking/Bloomquist/Roush Yates Racing Engine Super Late Model to his fourth COMP Cams Topless 100 triumph.  LOLMDS point’s leader, Jimmy Owens crossed the finish line in second in his #20 Reece Monuments/Bloomquist/Cornett entry. Defending champion, Jared Landers, rounded out the podium in his #777 Rocket/ECR Racing Engine Super Late Model.  Rounding out the top five were Steve Francis and Tyler Reddick.  Positions six through ten consisted of John Blankenship, Earl Pearson Jr., Jonathan Davenport, Steve Casebolt, and Wendell Wallace.

With Bloomquist’s tenth tour triumph of the 2011 season, Jimmy Owens saw his lead in the LOLMDS standings trimmed to 140 points heading into the next weekend’s events at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tennessee) on Thursday, August 25th; Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana on Friday, August 26th; and Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, KY on Saturday, August 27th.
