2013results_8-31.jpg   PORTSMOUTH, OH (August 31, 2013) – It has been several years since Hall-of-Famer Billy Moyer last visited Portsmouth Raceway Park. After Saturday night, he can put his name in the hat as a contender for the Dirt Track World Championship at PRP in October. He led all the way as he captured the Pepsi 50 River Days Rumble sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Moyer collected $15,000 for his win tonight.   Moyer’s second LOLMDS win of the season came before a packed house despite threating weather all night. Jimmy Owens; the current LOLMDS point’s leader; finished second, followed by 12th starting Dennis Erb Jr., 18thstarting Scott Bloomquist and Jason Feger.   “You have to give a big thanks to the track and Lucas Oil crew for getting this race in! They had some heavy rain this morning. The track was great all night and it had three grooves. To beat the rain, you have to take your hats off to everyone involved! We have not run here for several years, and I would say it was probably back in the GVS days that I was here. I certainly hope to be back here in October, going for that $50,000!”   The 55-year-old Moyer received pressure from Owens for several laps in the first half of the race. Despite a string of caution flags, Moyer was able to hold an advantage over Owens for the last half of the race. “To beat that 20 car says a lot! He has been on a roll lately! I want to thank all of my sponsors including Henderson Motorsports, Banner Valley Hauling, L&D Trucking, Midwest Sheet Metal, and Clements Racing Engines.” Moyer’s win was the 773rd of his illustrious career and came in his own Moyer Victory Circle ride.   Owens; in the Mike Reece, Reece Monument Company, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford; lengthened his points lead over Francis with his second place finish. “Well everybody knows Billy Moyer is one of the all-time greats, even with the caution flags that kept us bunched up, I had nothing for him! Congratulations to him and his crew, they deserved the win!”   Erb made a late-race rally to pass Bloomquist late in the race to nail down the third spot; his best ever finish at PRP. “Our car was really good at the end, we started passing cars in the last 15 or so laps! I just wish the race would have been 75 laps, we might have had something for Billy and Jimmy! This is the best finish we have ever had here, and we look forward to coming back here in October for the DTWC,” said the driver of the JL Scrap Metals, Bloomquist Race Cars Chevrolet.   Completing the top ten were Steve Francis, Doug Drown, Rod Conley, Steve Shaver and Billy Moyer Jr. In preliminary action, Jackie Boggs set the overall RED BUCK Fast time (Group A) amongst the 37 entrants, with a lap of 14.801 seconds. Mike Marlar set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 15.007 seconds. Doug Drown, Josh McGuire, Billy Moyer, and Jimmy Owens won their respective heat races. Zack Dohm and Scott Bloomquist won their respective B-Mains.   The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will continue its Labor Day Weekend triple-header on Sunday, September 1st, with the Hillbilly Hundred at I-77 Raceway Park in Ripley, WV. 2013results_8-30.jpg   ATTICA, OH (August 30, 2013) – Jimmy Owens continued his stronghold on the series with his 7th victory on Friday Night at Attica Raceway Park. He took the lead on lap six and led the rest of the way, pocketing $10,000 for the win. Brian Birkhofer came home in second, followed by Earl Pearson Jr., John Blankenship, and Steve Francis.   “I have to thank all these great fans for coming out tonight! This is our first time here, and we really like this place,” said Owens, who started third in the race. “We had a super car all night long! I think the first two finishers picked the same tire compound to run, and it paid off.”   Owens made a daring move to the inside of the track on the opening lap to take the lead from Russ King and Birkhofer. King fought back and took the lead from Owens on lap three and led the race for three circuits until Owens got back by him. King then held the second spot, using the top groove on the racetrack. Birkhofer got by King for second on lap 12 and stayed there for the remainder of the race.   “I have to thank my car owner Mike Reece, Reece Monument Company, Sunoco Race Fuels, Red Line Oil, Gantte Appraisals, Midwest Sheet Metal, and all of my other sponsors for making this possible. It is a great way to start the weekend and hopefully we can go to Portsmouth and I-77 with the same results.”   Birkhofer was in the ASi Racewear, MB Customs Chevrolet and was racing for the first time in three weeks after breaking his hand last month. “We didn’t have anything for Jimmy tonight; he was too strong. To come here after being off for so long and to run well with these guys felt really good. I will probably sleep pretty well tonight. It’s going to be a long weekend!”   Earl Pearson Jr had a solid run tonight after a couple tough races last week.“It feels good to have a Top-3 finish here. We have only been here once before and that was nine years ago. The crew has worked hard over the last two weeks and we have had a lot of misfortune, so we needed a good run,” said the driver of the Bobby Labonte, Lucas Oil Products, Longhorn Chevrolet.   Completing the top ten were Russ King, Dennis Erb Jr., Billy Moyer, Jeff Babcock, and Eddie Carrier Jr. In preliminary action, Brian Birkhofer set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 31 entrants, with a lap of 14.750 seconds. Jeff Babcock set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.949 seconds. Brian Birkhofer, Jimmy Owens, Russ King, and Earl Pearson Jr. won their respective heat races. Jon Henry won the B-Main.   The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will continue its Labor Day Weekend triple-header on Saturday, August 31st, at Portsmouth Raceway Park in Portsmouth, OH for the Pepsi 50 River Days Rumble. 2013results_8-24.jpg   LAWRENCEBURG, IN (August 24, 2013) – Steve Francis claimed his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season on Saturday Night at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Francis held off fellow Kentucky driver, Brad Neat for the win. Jimmy Owens finished third followed by Jared Landers and John Blankenship.   “They made us work hard for this win tonight. The car got a little hot and it was quite a battle! I had guys running on the inside of me, outside of me, and they were everywhere! The track was in great shape tonight,” said Francis, who remains second in the LOLMDS Championship Points Standings.   Early on, Francis battled with Eddie Carrier Jr. Duane Chamberlain who caught up to the leaders, and a three-wide battle for the lead ensued. Chamberlain last led on lap 17 until Francis forged ahead.   Neat ran second for three circuits early in the race before falling back but later charged back into the runner-up slot on lap 25. Owens, who started eighth, made his way into the top five near the end after battling side-by-side with Landers for third in the final laps.

Francis also thanked a multitude of sponsors and others in victory lane. “I have to thank Clint Bowyer for giving me this opportunity. I would also like to thank Barry, Lance, Tommy, and Brian. We all put our heads together and the car was just right! My daughter and wife couldn’t be here tonight, so I guess they will have to watch it on television. We have a lot of great sponsors of course, Georgia Boot, Peak Motor Oil, Cometic Gasket, Toyota, VP, Allstar Performance, Clements Racing Engines, and Barry Wright Race Cars.”   Neat had his best LOLMDS finish of the season, “Congrats to Steve on the win! We both run Barry Wright Race Cars, but his was just a bit better tonight. It’s an honor to run against these guys, and they are the best in the business.”   Owens settled for third. “We had a good race with Jared! We just couldn’t get up to those first two guys.  Only with a caution could we would have had a shot!”   Completing the top ten were Greg Johnson, Earl Pearson Jr., Scott James, Dustin Linville, and Tim Isenberg. In preliminary action, Justin Rattliff set the overall time (Group B) amongst the 28 entrants, with a lap of 14.426 seconds. John Blankenship set the fastest time in Group A with a time of 14.525 seconds. Brad Neat, Steve Francis, and Jared Landers won their respective heat races. 2013results_8-22.jpg   BULLS GAP, TN (August 22, 2013) – Chris Madden held off defending Scorcher winner, Billy Ogle Jr. to win the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on Thursday Night at Volunteer Speedway. Madden led all 50 laps for the $10,000 victory. The win marked his second series win of the season. Ogle stayed within striking distance of Madden over the last half of the race, but Madden proved to be too strong. For the third consecutive LOLMDS event, Dale McDowell finished third. Scott Bloomquist came home fourth, followed by 5-time track champion, Vic Hill.

“That was a demanding 50 laps! Joe (Loven) gave us a heck of a racetrack tonight; I thought it was in better shape tonight than it has been in a long time! I slowed up for a little bit, and I couldn’t figure out why I was so loose getting into the corners,” said the driver of the Clements Racing Engines, Bloomquist Race Cars Chevrolet.

“I had a great race car tonight, and we just picked up where we left off at Batesville last week. We made a few adjustments and the car was awesome from the time we unloaded it! I have to thank Century Plastics, Hamricks of Gaffney, Cushman Paint and Body, Henderson Amusement, Hoosier, Ohlins, and everybody else who helps out,” said the 38-year-old racer who recorded his fourth career LOLMDS win.

The most serious incident happened when point’s leader Jimmy Owens slowed on the frontstretch with a flat tire on lap 12 and several drivers piled-up in turn two. Don O’Neal tumbled down the track. O’Neal was checked out as a precautionary measure.

Ogle made the move for second when he past McDowell on lap 24 and then hounded Madden the rest of the distance. “I tried to cut the corners on him (Madden), but he was just too strong tonight. I thought maybe starting on the front row, we could win this race two years in a row, but it wasn’t meant to be. Congrats to him on the win!” said the driver of the Blount Excavating, Rocket Chassis entry.

McDowell had to fight off Bloomquist over the last part of the race to finish third. “I had a good race with Scott tonight and held him off. We are going to keep digging and get us a victory soon,” said the driver of the Team Dillon Warrior Race Cars Chevrolet.

Completing the top ten were Eddie Carrier Jr., John Blankenship, Jimmy Owens, Steve Francis, and Dennis Erb Jr. In preliminary action, Chris Madden set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 33 entrants, with a lap of 12.438 seconds. Billy Ogle Jr. set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 12.488 seconds. Chris Madden, Scott Bloomquist, Billy Ogle Jr., and Dale McDowell won their respective heat races. Steve Casebolt and Mark Douglas won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action on Saturday, August 24th, with the “Whiskey City 50” from Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, IN. The event will feature RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 50-Lap main event. LOCUST GROVE, AR (August 18, 2013) – Terry Phillips captured the biggest win of his Late Model racing career on Sunday Afternoon at Batesville Motor Speedway.  Phillips pocketed $40,000 for winning the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned 21st Annual COMP Cams Topless 100 presented by Crop Production Services.  The event was delayed till today at 1PM after heavy rains saturated the track last night and track officials couldn’t get the track to dry out enough to race on.

Terry Phillips, the second-generation Missouri native and son of legendary racer Larry Phillips took the lead on lap 79 from Jimmy Owens after starting 7th. Owens made a last lap charge to try and retake the lead but finished one-car length behind Phillips. Following Phillips and Owens were: Dale McDowell, Chris Madden, and Earl Pearson Jr. who rounded out the top five finishers.

In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, Phillips was elated to win this crown jewel cup event. “Before today, I’ve led this race with two laps to go and not won it. That time was probably the biggest heartbreak of my career, but to win this today was the biggest win of my career!! I want to say thank you to all my fans and sponsors that were here today! I just love this place!” said the 47-year-old veteran driver.

“I have to thank Andy’s Frozen Custard, Don Babb, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Schoenfeld Headers, and all the fans for coming back today.  The car worked so well on the bottom. I also want to thank Roush-Yates Engines and Bloomquist Race Cars for all of their help. It was truly a team win”, stated Phillips.

Mike Marlar led the first 30 laps of the race before being passed by Owens.  Owens then held a steady lead, which became increasingly closer as Dale McDowell and Billy Moyer pressured Owens in the middle stages of the race. Phillips reached the third spot on lap 66, and then rocketed to second by lap 78. Just a lap later, he got around Owens for the lead.

Owens led the most laps during the 100-event and finished second to extend his series points lead.  “I was racing for the win,” said the 2-time series champion.  “He (Phillips) drove a heck of a race. We bumped a little bit, but that’s racing! Congrats to Terry! I want to thank all the fans for coming back today, it was a very good race for daytime! We had an awesome car the whole race, and we just wanted a top five finish, so we are thrilled with this finish!”

In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, McDowell stated: “Our car was good the entire race and we could roll through the turns better than everyone else, it seemed.  I just couldn’t clear Jimmy a couple times when I got beside him. Then Terry got by me on that restart and just motored away from all of us there at the end”, stated McDowell.

Sixth through tenth in the finishing order were: Jimmy Mars, Don O’Neal, Mike Marlar, Scott Bloomquist, and Steve Francis.

In preliminary action, Mike Marlar set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 55 entrants, with a lap of 13.899 seconds. Billy Moyer set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.146 seconds. Mike Marlar, Jimmy Owens, Scott Bloomquist, Dale McDowell, Jesse Stovall, and Tyler Reddick won their respective heat races. Don O’Neal, Steve Francis, and David Breazeale won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action on Thursday, August 22nd at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN and then on Saturday, August 24th the series will travel to Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, IN. Both events will feature RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-Lap, $10,000-to-win main events.
