KNOXVILLE, IA (September 28, 2013) – Darrell Lanigan used a late-race restart to his advantage, passing Josh Richards on lap 95 and leading the remainder of the race to win the 10th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway.  Lanigan earned $40,000 for his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory.

Josh Richards won the preliminary feature events on Thursday and Friday and was looking to become the second driver in the history of the event to sweep all three nights along with Billy Moyer in 2010. Richards would have to settle for a runner-up finish tonight in the 100-lap feature event followed by Tim McCreadie, defending race winner, Steve Francis, and Billy Moyer rounded out the top five finishers.

Richards led the first six laps of the race until Dale McDowell took over the point for one circuit. Richards fought back and regained the top spot on lap eight.  Richards held the lead until Lanigan took over on lap 20. After the top five drivers battled fiercely for most of the race up front, the final caution came out for Jason Feger who was running third on lap 93 but was collected in a violent crash that included Don O”Neal, Dale McDowell and Scott Bloomquist. This set up a six-lap shootout to the finish as both Richards and Lanigan would lead the field back to green. On the restart, Lanigan dove to the bottom as he and Richards raced side-by-side down the backstretch.

Lanigan passed Richards before the cars entered turn three on lap 95, allowing him to carry his momentum to the victory.  “I wanted to win this race so bad,” said the 43-year old Kentucky native.  “Our car was good all weekend here.  We didn’t make the trip last year, but to come back and win this race for the first time, is phenomenal.  Knoxville is right up there among the elite tracks in dirt track racing and they do a tremendous job with the racing surface’, stated an ecstatic Lanigan in victory lane.

Lanigan went onto compliment the facility and his team on his crown jewel victory. “This race continues to grow every year and really is a great event with a great purse. We are just honored to be able to come here, and to beat these guys says a lot about our race team, our Club 29 Rocket, Cornett Racing Engines, and all of the people that help us out. Thanks to all the fans for coming out this weekend,” said Lanigan.

Richards now has 3-second place finishes in this event was disappointed with his second place finish as he thought he had a car capable of winning.  “We started off real good, the car worked well, then we slowed the pace a little bit, and that’s when Darrell caught me and got by me the first time.  That red flag with six laps to go really hurt us, I am kicking myself a little bit.  When he got by me on that restart, I knew I was in some trouble, because I couldn’t turn the car in the corners”

McCreadie had a good performance on Friday Night and backed it up with a solid third–place in the 100-lap finale.  “We haven’t run that well for about a month. To come here and get third is almost like a win for us.  I know we have won this race before, but hopefully it’s a big step forward to close out the year.  This is such a good-paying race, everyone needs to support these kinds of events’, stated McCreadie.

Completing the top ten were John Blankenship, Brady Smith, Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Owens, and Chad Simpson.

In preliminary action Steve Lance won the D-Main. Brian Birkhofer won the C-Main. Morgan Bagley won the B-Main.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action next weekend October 5th and 6th, with a pair of events in the “Peach State”. On Friday, Oct. 5th, the series will head to Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA for the Lucas Oil Dixie Shootout. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 6th, the series will make an appearance at Rome International Speedway in Rome, GA for the Rome Showdown. Both events will feature RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-Lap, $10,000-to-win main events. For more information, log on to www.dixiespeedway.com and www.raceromespeedway.com.

KNOXVILLE, IA (September 27, 2013) – Josh Richards showed his speed at Knoxville Raceway, winning the $7,000-to-win feature event on Friday Night. Richards also captured Thursday Nights’ preliminary feature. On Saturday Night, Richards can become the second driver in the history of the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals to sweep all three nights. Billy Moyer completed the feat in 2010.

Jimmy Owens came home in second followed by A.J. Diemel, Earl Pearson Jr., and 21st starting, Tim McCreadie.

The 25 lap main event got off to a rocky start with a pair of caution flags during the first five laps of the race. Jimmy Owens led the first four laps, until A.J. Diemel took over the point. Diemel held the lead for four circuits until Richards powered by him on lap nine.

“It was a crazy start to the race,” said Richards, who is racing at Knoxville for the first time in three years. “Our car was real good again tonight. This track suits our driving style, and we go into the turns wide-open and let the car rotate through the turns. As I said last night, this is one of my favorite tracks. I certainly have missed coming here the last three years, and to win the first two nights, it’s just unbelievable.”

Richards held a sizable lead over Diemel and Owens with ten laps to go. Owens tried several times to get around Diemel. Finally, with seven to go, Owens made the pass on Diemel for second, coming out of turn number two. A caution with five laps to go set-up a dash between Richards and Owens, but Richards would prevail, holding off Owens for the victory.

“I have to thank Valvoline, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ernie D’s Enterprises, Ace Metal Works and Sunoco Race Fuels. This Roush-Yates Ford engine has been solid all-year long,” said the driver of the Mark Richards Racing Rocket Chassis house-car.

Owens, the 2-time LOLMDS National Champion, commented, “We were having electrical problems on the restarts, it was cracking and popping, I thought it was going to die on us, and then finally it ran like it should towards the end. We got around him (Diemel), but Josh was already so far out in front, we weren’t going to catch him. We got that caution with five to go, and I was going to try a move going into one, but if I couldn’t clear him, I wasn’t going to take a chance of tearing us both up”.

Diemel had his best career finish at Knoxville, earning a podium finish. “We are extremely happy to come home third against these Lucas guys. I thought maybe early on we had a real good chance to win tonight. We learned so much here the last two nights. It builds our confidence heading into Saturday Night’s big race.”

Completing the top ten were Steve Francis, Jimmy Mars, Jason Feger, Ryan Gustin, John Blankenship. In preliminary action Ryan Gustin set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group A) with a lap of 17.941 seconds. John Blankenship set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group B) with a lap of 18.021 seconds. Brady Smith, Steve Francis, Chris Simpson, Ryan Unzicker, Darrell Lanigan, and Shannon Babb won their respective heat races. Denny Eckrich won the D-Main. Jason Rauen won the C-Main. Ryan Gustin won the B-Main.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action tomorrow night, Saturday, September 28th, with a D-Main, C-Main, B-Main, and the $40,000-to-win 100-Lap main event. KNOXVILLE, IA (September 26, 2013) – In his first visit to Knoxville Raceway since 2010, Josh Richards captured the opening night of the 10th Annual Lucas Oil Knoxville Late Model Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores. Richards took the lead from Brandon Sheppard on lap eight and led the remainder of the race, for the $7,000 victory in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event.   Richards took the Mark Richards Racing, Valvoline, Roush-Yates Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis Ford to Lucas Oil Victory Lane ahead of Darrell Lanigan, Jason Feger, Dale McDowell, and Bub McCool.   “It’s great to be back here, I love this place! It’s hard to believe it has been three years! The track was great as always, and it’s one of my favorite tracks, no doubt,” said the 25-year-old racer. I could hear him (Lanigan) a few times, but I just kept my line. I had a couple of issues in turn two and he was able to pull along-side me a few times.”   Sheppard took the lead at the start of the 25 lapper and looked dominant in the early going. A red-flag for a multi-car accident involving Jimmy Owens, Dennis Erb Jr., and Joel Callahan halted the action with seven laps complete. All drivers escaped unharmed, but their cars were done for the night.   When the race went green again, Richards made the pass for the lead on Sheppard. Richards then had to fight off several challenges from Lanigan as he held the lead to the finish. Feger made it close towards the end, rallying on the topside to earn a podium finish.   “We had a really good car! He (Richards) was just a tick better tonight! We aren’t used to this hard-tire rule, but it’s the same for everyone! The crew did a great job. The track was great as always here! We got some good points tonight, so we’ll tune on the car even more tomorrow,” said Lanigan.   Feger nearly stole the win from the top two, but his efforts came up just short. “We really like running here! That berm was a little tricky tonight, but we had a good car,Like Josh and Darrell said, we have to get used to these harder tires. My car was better as the race went on. I think with some more work we can win one of the next two nights,” said Feger.   Completing the top ten were Billy Moyer, Chad Simpson, John Blankenship, Brandon Sheppard, and Earl Pearson Jr. In preliminary action Don O’Neal set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group A) with a lap of 17.363 seconds. Dale McDowell set the RED BUCK Fast Time (Group B) with a lap of 17.718 seconds. Billy Moyer, Bub McCool, Joel Callahan, Tony Jackson Jr., Morgan Bagley, and Steve Francis won their respective heat races. Ryan Gustin won the D-Main. Shannon Babb won the C-Main. Eddie Carrier Jr. won the B-Main.   The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action tomorrow night for the second preliminary night at the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store. There will be RED BUCK Time Trials, Heat Races, last chance races, and another 25 Lap main event. The weekend will conclude on Saturday, September 28th, with a D-Main, C-Main, B-Main, and the $40,000-to-win 100-Lap main event. BROWNSTOWN, IN (September 21, 2013) – Don O’Neal picked up his fourth career Jackson 100 victory, at the historic Jackson County Fairgrounds bullring. O’Neal took the lead from defending race winner, Jimmy Owens after a lap 68 restart and pulled away from the field for the $15,000 win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event. The 34th Annual Jackson 100 at Brownstown Speedway was also part of the ASi Crown Jewel Cup Presented by DirtonDirt.com.

Dustin Linville charged from his ninth starting spot to finish second.  John Blankenship came home third, followed by Owens and 23rd starting, Steve Francis rounding out the top five.

“I can’t believe it,” said O’Neal, who had missed almost a month of the LOLMDS season after suffering a back injury in August.  “This is my home track; it’s great to win here in front of these fans.  The track was a little rough with the rain, but it was extremely racy.  After that last caution, I don’t know what happened to the 20 car, but once we were out front, it was smooth sailing,” said O’Neal in Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 33rd time in his career.

“I just took a deep breath on that caution, Jimmy was running a good line there, and it was going to be tough to catch him and pass him.  When the race restarted I just went by him, and then found a fast line.  I have to thank Tader Masters, MasterSbilt Race Cars, Jay Dickens Racing Engines, Optima Batteries, Seubert Calf Ranches, Tarpy Trucking, Superior Cleaning, and Independence Lumber and all of our great product sponsors that make this possible.”

O’Neal now ties Scott Bloomquist as the only 4-time winner of the track’s most prestigious race. The win also marked O’Neal’s 53rd career win at Brownstown, trailing only Jim Curry and John Gill on the track’s all-time win list.

Owens grabbed the lead at the start of the 100-lap main event and held the point until he and O’Neal swapped the lead during laps 16-19.  Once out in front, Owens looked to be on his way to back-to-back Jackson 100 wins until a fateful caution on lap 68.  Owens lost several spots on the restart, dropping back to fifth at one point.  Owens rebounded to finish fourth, just ahead of Francis at the finish line.

Linville had his best ever LOLMDS finish and was extremely pleased with his effort.  “I have to thank Audie Swartz from Swartz Race Cars, Bullock Engines and everybody else for all of their help. To run with Don and to pass the World 100 winner (Blankenship) is just unbelievable.  I just love to come up here and race.  The track crew did a great job with all the rain they have had in the last couple of days.”

Blankenship ran as high as second in the race and had a couple of opportunities to steal the win away from O’Neal, but his main focus was trying to hold off the youngster, Linville.  “He (Linville) drove a heck of race; I don’t know where he came from.  Jimmy looked like the car to beat there for a while.  Once Don got out in front, we were all chasing him.”

Francis amazed the capacity-crowd with a Top-5 finish, after his car nearly flipped during his heat race.  He was taken to the hospital for tests and was then cleared to race.  He took a provisional and started 23rd and came home in fifth.

Completing the top ten were Greg Johnson, Scott Bloomquist, Steve Shaver, Dennis Erb Jr., and Earl Pearson Jr.

In preliminary action, John Blankenship set the overall RED BUCK fast time (Group A) amongst the 46 entrants, with a lap of 14.506 seconds. Scott Bloomquist set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 14.549 seconds. Jimmy Owens, Earl Pearson Jr., Don O’Neal, and Dale McDowell won their respective heat races. Greg Johnson and Billy Moyer won their respective B-Mains.

RIPLEY, WV (September 1, 2013) Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader, Jimmy Owens, won his second career Hillbilly 100 on Sunday Night at I-77 Raceway Park.  Owens took the lead on lap 61 and went on to win his 8th series event in 2013 and $25,000 for winning the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned crown jewel event. The massive crowd also saw Owens increase his points lead in the chase for the ASi Crown Jewel Cup-Presented by Dirtondirt.com and the $10,000 bonus.

Steve Francis charged from his eighth starting spot to finish second.  Earl Pearson, Jr., who started 10th, finished third, followed by 19th starting Billy Moyer, and Steve Shaver rounded out the top five finishers.

Dennis Erb Jr. led the first 60 laps of the race and appeared to have one of the strongest cars in the race from the start. But Erb’s machine began smoking heavy during the middle stages of the race allowing Owens to close the gap. Owens then passed Erb for the lead coming off of turn number two on Lap 61. Erb finally slowed in turn four on lap 62 bringing out a caution as his night ended abruptly with mechanical failure.

“I saw Dennis smoking for a long time. I wanted to pull up beside him and tell him to save the motor and not damage it. I feel bad for them, they work so hard, and they had a good car. I am not sure if I could have ever gotten around him.  He has led so many of these crown jewel races and he is going to get one soon,” said the Owens in victory lane.

“I really like this place, its racy and the fans get to see a great show. I want to thank Carl Short for putting this race on!  We have been on a roll this weekend; let’s hope this continues,” said Owens.

“I also have to thank my car owner, Mike Reece. Winning another crown jewel event for him and my crew is just remarkable.  My sponsors, Reece Monument Company, Gantte Appraisals, Red Line Oil, Sunoco Fuels, Ohlins Shocks, Midwest Sheet Metals, Cornett Engines, and Bloomquist Race Cars give us a ton of support, thanks to them all!”

Francis passed Scott Bloomquist for second after a restart and stayed close to Owens for a while. Owens eventually pulled away for the win.  “I tried my hardest to stay with him. Congrats to Jimmy and his crew! We had a good car to come from where we started , we are pleased with second.  We have tried for a long time to win this race; ever since the Pennsboro days to be exact; we hope to get one of these someday,” said the driver of the Clint Bowyer, Georgia Boot-sponsored Barry Wright Race Cars #15 machine.

Pearson driving the Bobby Labonte, Lucas Oil, and Longhorn Chassis hung tough as he battled several other drivers to a podium finish.  “I can’t believe we finished that race! I thought maybe I had a damaged radiator or something after that tangle with Owens and Shaver early in the race. The car wouldn’t turn very well in the corners like I wanted it to after that.  But we will take a solid third place and head to the next race”, stated Pearson.

Completing the top ten were Eddie Carrier Jr., John Blankenship, Billy Moyer Jr., Zack Dohm, and Donnie Moran. In preliminary action, Walker Arthur set the overall RED BUCK fast time (Group A) amongst the 61 entrants, with a lap of 13.268 seconds. Randy Armes set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 13.293 seconds. Dennis Erb Jr., Steve Shaver, Billy Moyer Jr., Jimmy Owens, Chris Garnes, and Scott Bloomquist won their respective heat races. Billy Moyer and Jared Landers won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return to action with a double-header weekend of racing on Friday, September 20th, with the Ralph Latham Memorial at Florence Speedway in Union, KY and the Jackson 100 at Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, IN on Saturday, September 21st.
