2012results_6-23.jpg   RURAL RETREAT, VA (June 23, 2012) – John Blankenship of Williamson, WV was the last driver to arrive to race Saturday at Wythe Raceway, but at the end of the night, he was first to cross the finish line as he collected the win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series “Blue Ridge 50”. Blankenship started 14th and roared through the field, gaining the lead from Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA on lap 36.   Blankenship then had to race through a green-white-checker finish after a caution came out with two laps to go. He went on to score his second career LOLMDS victory. Davenport finished second in the Clint Bowyer Racing, Georgia Boot, Barry Wright Toyota as he just barely edged our Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA in the Team Dillon Racing, Clements Race Engines, Warrior Chevrolet.   Blankenship; whose first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win came last year at Hagerstown (MD) Speedway after starting 17th; earned $10,000 for the victory in front of the largest crowd in the track’s history. “I can’t thank the crew enough, Tom Buckingham, and everybody did a great job on the car after time trials, we qualified poorly, but we passed some cars in the heat, so I knew we might have a good car for the feature,” said the 30-year-old Blankenship.   “We started on the outside of the seventh row and we had to get by a lot of tough drivers. The car was just awesome from the start,” said Blankenship, who reached the top five by the 20th circuit.   “Once we got to the top five, we rolled around Madden and Dale (McDowell). Then we got to Davenport and I knew it would be a tough race with him, but we raced hard there for a while until I was finally able to clear him off of two. I have to thank my sponsors, Coal America’s Energy, Todd Case Trucking, Fast Lane, VP Race Fuels, Bear Cove Village, Integra Shocks, Cornett Race Engines and Rocket Chassis.”   Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC came from the 20th starting position to claim fourth, just ahead of Kennie Compton Jr. of Bland, VA, who was the highest finishing home state driver.   Completing the top ten were Vic Hill of Morristown, TN; Chris Madden of Gaffney, SC; Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN; Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; and Eric Wells of Hazard, KY.     In preliminary action, Tyler Reddick set the Red Buck Cigars Fast Time amongst the 29 entrants with a lap of 16.077 seconds. Heat races were taken by: Jonathan Davenport, Vic Hill, Tyler Reddick, and Dale McDowell. Jared Landers and Donald Bradsher won their respective B-Mains.      The series will be back in action on July 1st and 3rd for a pair of $10,000 spectacular “Buckeye State” show-downs. On July 1st, the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series take to Portsmouth Raceway Park in Portsmouth, OH for the “Independence 50”. 2012results_6-22.jpg   GAFFNEY, SC (June 22, 2012) – Steve Francis of Ashland, KY held off a late-race charge from Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA to win the 14th Annual Grassy Smith Memorial on Friday Night at Cherokee Speedway. Francis earned his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned win of 2012 while piloting the Valvoline, Barry Wright House Car. He is taking home $10,000 for the victory. It is also Francis’ first ever win at the track.

Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV, got around Davenport near the end, to finish second. Davenport had passed Francis for the lead heading down the backstretch with five laps remaining, but a caution flag sent him back to the second spot, taking away the potential winning pass. Davenport got out of the groove in turn two on the ensuing restart which allowed Shaver to get by. Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN finished fourth, followed by 2-time series champion, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN.

Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN led the first 18 laps of the race. Francis passed him in heavy traffic on lap 19. O’Neal then suffered driveline failure on the restart, forcing his car to slow dramatically on the frontstretch. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN, the current series point’s leader, suffered a flat tire and pitted, giving up fifth position in the race.   Owens had run as high as second until his tire started to go flat.

Francis went on to lead the rest of the event and took the victory at his car owner and chassis builder, Barry Wright’s home turf. “To win for Barry and Lance Wright here at their home track is just terrific! I couldn’t wait until this race was over, because I wasn’t sure how much right rear tire we had left. We held on, and I had to get up on the wheel at the end when Jonathan pressured me on the outside,” said the 44-year-old racer.

“We have been coming here a long-time and to finally win here is something we can be proud of, the Clements Engine ran great and the car was just superb, I was saving my tires. I got a little too conservative there, we caught a break on that yellow when he (Davenport) got by me.”

Completing the top ten were Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, GA; Jeff Smith of Gastonia, NC; Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC; Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; and Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL.

In preliminary action, Mike Marlar set the Red Buck Cigars Fast Time amongst the 28 entrants with a lap of 15.541 seconds. Heat races were taken by: Jimmy Owens, Steve Shaver, Don O’Neal, and Steve Francis. Johnny Pursley and Ross Bailes won their respective B-Mains. The series heads to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia tomorrow, Saturday June 23rd, for the Inaugural “Blue Ridge 50” at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, VA. The event will include Red Buck Cigars Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 50-lap main event. For more information, log onto www.wytheraceway.com.

TAZEWELL, TN (June 3, 2012) – Two-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Champion, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN led all 50-laps of tonight’s Toyota Knoxville 50 at Tazewell Speedway.   Bloomquist completed a sweep of the night’s racing activities. He started out by setting a new track record in time trials, winning his heat, and taking his third LOLMDS win of the season. He earned $10,000 for the victory.   Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN gave chase to Bloomquist for most of the race as he wound up in second followed by Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN, John Blankenship of Williamson, WV and Ear Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL.   “The car was just phenomenal tonight,” said Bloomquist, who earned his 45th career win on the LOLMDS tour. “The Roush Yates Racing Engine ran perfect and the car handled so well, right from hot laps on. I want to thank my crew, sponsors, and everybody with my race team. Hopefully we can get on a roll again.”   “The traffic is always an issue here, we ran up on some cars and I backed off the throttle a little. I didn’t know how close Don (O’Neal) was, but I had to be careful. I want to thank Bob and Barb Miller, they are here tonight and they have been long supporters of us. I want to also thank Hawkeye Trucking, Base Racing Fuel, Lucas Oil Products, Optima Batteries, Sweet Mfg, Ohlins, Weld Racing, and Lane Automotive.”   Bloomquist held a good-sized lead for most of the race, as only two cautions slowed the event. On each restart, Bloomquist pulled away from the field. O’Neal tried to track Bloomquist down in the final laps but ran out of time. Ogle briefly held the second-spot after the first restart, but O’Neal eventually got him back, and chased down the leader.   Rounding out the top ten were; Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA; Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; Vic Hill of Mosheim, TN; and Eric Wells of Hazard, KY.         In preliminary action, Scott Bloomquist set a blistering pace in Red Buck Cigars Time Trials and clocking a New Track Record, 10.822 seconds. Heat races were taken by: Scott Bloomquist, Don O’Neal, and John Blankenship.   The series will take a couple weekends off and return to action on Friday and Saturday Night’s June 22nd and 23rd at Cherokee Speedway and Wythe Raceway. Both events will pay $10,000-to-win and feature Red Buck Cigars Time Trials, Heats, B-Mains, and 50-Lap Main Events. WHEATLAND, MO (May 26, 2012) – Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN successfully defended his DART Show-Me 100 Presented by ProtectThe Harvest.com crown on Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Owens earned $30,000 for his second consecutive series victory. In a hard-fought race that went down to the final lap, Owens held off 27th starting John Blankenship of Williamson, WV and Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL for the win. The event was co-sanctioned with the Lucas Oil MLRA.

With high-flying passes on nearly every lap of the entire event, it was anyone’s race to win. Owens started from the pole position and took the lead at the start of the race. Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR; a 3-time winner of the event; challenged Owens for the lead early on. Tyler Reddick of Corning, CA, the 16-year-old phenom, made his presence known early. He was going to a contender for the win as he came from his seventh starting spot to pass both Moyer and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN to take over the second spot.

Reddick then put the heat on Owens for the lead, diving to the bottom of the track Reddick gained ground on Owens and was gunning for the lead when his engine popped with 16 laps scored. Bloomquist inherited the second position after Reddick’s night ended.

Jared Landers of Batesville, AR quickly became one of the wild-cards of the race. Landers started 25th and powered through the field, running third by lap 19. The top three of Owens, Bloomquist, and Landers then pulled away from Erb, who was fourth at this point. The leaders experienced heavy traffic with 30 laps in the books and ten circuits later they were nose-to-tail.

A caution on lap 48 for Will Vaught bunched the field up. On the restart, Landers went for the lead and took over the top spot, passing Owens on lap 49. Landers then led two more laps until his power steering started to go out. Owens regained the point from Landers on lap 53.

Landers then started to fade as several cars passed him. Bloomquist moved into second and he and Erb started to challenge Owens for the lead. Owens began to push in the turns as the cushion became a bit treacherous. He had trouble entering turn two and exiting turn four, allowing both Bloomquist and Erb to stay close.

Cautions for Kevin Sather on lap 74 and Bloomquist on lap 76, only added to the mix of exciting restarts. Erb picked up the challenge for the lead, racing Owens hard until the final caution of the race came out for Eric Wells with 89 laps scored. The field was set-up for the final free-for-all, with everyone gunning for the top spot with only 11 laps to go.

On the restart Blankenship; who had surged through the field, slid up in turn two, directly in front of Owens to briefly take the lead. But Owens dove down beneath Blankenship, and the two went door to door down the back stretch. Owens hung on to just edge out both Blankenship and Erb at the finish line.

"That was an awesome race, I think maybe we broke something on the left rear, I don’t know, the car was a handful all night! If I could stay up on that cushion, I knew I couldn't let those guys get by me, I couldn’t even take off good on the restarts," said the 40-year-old who won for the 31st time in his LOLMDS career.

"They could get a good run on me on the restarts, and luckily we were able to hang on. John (Blankenship) passed me there after that last restart, and I thought, well we have got to cross back over and kind of return the favor. My hat's off to John he had a great car, and made a great run."

"I have to thank my car owner Mike Reece, my sponsors Reece Monument Company, Sunoco Race Fuels, Gantte Appraisals, Red Line Oil, Midwest Sheet Metal, Ohlins, Hoosier, Keyser and C&C Tucking." The Bloomquist Race Cars entry that Owens drives is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine.

For the fourth time in the last five races, Blankenship earned the title of Hard Charger of the Race in the Coal America’s Energy, Cornett Race Engines, Rocket. Erb bounced back with a solid third place finish in his JL Scrap Metals, Bloomquist Race Cars, Chevrolet.

Austin Hubbard of Seaford, DE also made a strong run. He started dead last in 29th place and worked his way up to a fourth place finish in his first ever appearance at Lucas Oil Speedway. Hubbard’s run came in the Trinity Logistics, Cornett Race Engines, Rocket Chevrolet. Moyer completed the top five in his Banner Valley Hauling, Clements Race Engines, Moyer Victory Circle Chevy.

Completing the top ten were Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA; Earl Pearson of Jacksonville, FL; Eric Turner of Hermitage, MO ; and John Anderson of Omaha, NE.

In preliminary action, Jimmy Owens set the Red Buck Cigars Fast Time amongst the 55 entrants with a lap of 15.513 seconds. Heat races were taken by: Jimmy Owens, Scott Bloomquist, Don O’Neal, and Billy Moyer. Billy Moyer Jr. and Jesse Stovall won their respective B-Mains.

The series will make its way back to the hills of Tennessee and to Kentucky next weekend as the stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series converge on Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN and Florence Speedway in Union, KY on Friday and Saturday Nights, June 1st and 2nd. Both events will pay $10,000-to-win, with Red Buck Cigars Time Trials, Full Heat Races, B-Mains, and 50-Lap main events.
